LENTON FLATS

Conociendo el Nottingham de Ian y Tricia, fuimos conociendo, por defecto, a personas que se mueven dentro de los círculos del arte. Entre ellas el director de cine Sam Derby-Cooper, que resulta ser uno de los hijos de Tricia e Ian (los otros dos son Molly, bailarina, y Charly, músico).

El último proyecto cinematográfico de Sam es un documental que cuenta los sucesos alrededor de 5 edificios (Lenton Flats) de un barrio de Nottingham, desde su construcción en los años 60 hasta su actual demolición.

Junto a Sam, trabaja Tracey McMaster como productora, y ambos están actualmente terminando de grabar dicho documental.

Tuvimos la oportunidad, gracias a Tricia e Ian, de acudir a un coloquio en el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de la ciudad, en el que se exponía el paralelismo entre las huelgas ocurridas en Kirkby (Liverpool) por el incremento de las rentas, y la situación actual con la demolición y nueva construcción de edificios, y el gasto que conlleva.

En cuanto a las huelgas en Kirkby, asunto que desconocía, se proyectó un documental de 1974 (The Kirkby Rent Strike) que me dejó helada por la dureza de las imágenes, con un realismo subyugado a las cámaras.

La parte referida a los Lenton Flats mostraba documentación contrastada por un archivista, y un tráiler que bien podría ser un corto de Lars Von Trier.

LENTON FLATS

While we know the Nottingham of Ian and Tricia, we're knowing people who moves in the circles of art. For example, the film director Sam Derby-Cooper, who is the son of Tricia and Ian (the other two are Molly, dancer, and Charly, musician).

The last film project of Sam is a documentary that tells the life about 5 buildings (Lenton Flats) in a suburb of Nottingham, since its construction in the 60s to its current demolition.

Along with Sam, Tracey McMaster works as a producer, and both are currently finishing the recording of this documentary.

We had the opportunity, thanks to Tricia and Ian, to go to a talk at the Contemporary, in which they discuss the parallelism between the strikes occurred in Kirkby (Liverpool) by increasing rents was exposed, and the current situation with the demolition and new construction of buildings, and the expense involved.

As for strikes in Kirkby, thing that I was ignorant of, they projected a documentary of 1974 (The Kirkby Rent Strike) that left me frozen by the hardness and the realism of the pictures.

The part relating to Lenton Flats had documentation corroborated by an archivist, and a trailer that could well be a short of Lars Von Trier.

PASEO POR EL CANAL

Primer domingo, día del señor… y día del picnic.
Ya integradas en la familia Gardiner, alquilamos una bicicleta del ayuntamiento para recorrer el Canal (¡£1 por 24h! Nada que ver con Vallabici) mientras que Ian y Tricia manejaban su tándem.

El paseo empezó por el Canal de Nottingham y Beeston. Éste Canal se abrió en  1796 con la intención de crear una vía alternativa y más barata para el transporte de carbón, cuyo comercio estaba en auge en aquel momento.
Tiene 23,6 Km de largo y va desde Cromford Canal hasta River Trent. Actualmente, la parte del Canal que toca con el centro de la ciudad, es una zona comercial (sobre todo nocturna) y está repleta de bares y restaurantes. Sin embargo, abarca una longitud mucho mayor, y ésta no está tan cuidada.

Nuestro plan era recorrerlo hasta el final, hacer el picnic y volver al inicio, pero…”this is England!”. La lluvia no nos quiso dejar y tuvimos que regresar para hacer el picnic a cubierta. Del pan tumaca al pollo, y de las cervezas al gazpacho. Una comida ecléctica y pasada por agua, pero que nos dio la oportunidad de conocernos un poco mejor.

CANAL WALK

First Sunday, Lord's day ... and picnic's day!.
Already integrated into the Gardiner's family, we rent some bikes to tour the Nottingham and Beeston Canal (£1 for 24 hours! Nothing to do with Vallabici) while Ian and Tricia drove their lovely tandem.

This Canal was opened in 1796 with the intention of create a cheaper alternative to transport coal, whose trade was booming at the time.
It has 14.7 miles long and runs from Cromford Canal to River Trent. Currently, the part of the Canal which is in the center of town, is a commercial area (especially at night) and is full of bars and restaurants. However, it covers a much greater length, and this is not so clean.

Our plan was to follow it to the end, make the picnic and return to the start, but ... "this is England". The rain would not stop and we had to return to picnic on cover. Pan tumaca, chicken, beer and gazpacho. An eclectic and wet food, but it gave us the opportunity to know each other a little better.

PRIMER ASALTO

Así, a vista previa…. ARTE.

Ian y Tricia, anfitriones de nuestra llegada, quisieron mostrarnos de qué pasta estaba hecha Nottingham, y para ello sacaron su artillería pesada: gente joven con ideas. (No esperaba menos de dos artistas como ellos. Su historial se queda corto).

Tuvimos la suerte de llegar justo en la época de final de curso, cuando todos los alumnos exhiben sus proyectos finales. Trent Univertsity, Fine Arts School, exposiciones alternativas, nuevos espacios…

Toda esta información masiva, más la adaptación al idioma y al cambio, más el shock por estar en un lugar tan increíble, en cuatro días. Nos dejó por los suelos, pero sobretodo extasiadas.

ROUND 1

Well, at first sight… ART.

Ian and Tricia, the host of our arrival, they wanted to show us how was Nottingham, and for that they took their heaviest artillery: young people with ideas. (Clever. I didn't hope less of these two artists. Their accomplishments confirm this.)

We were lucky to arrive just in time for the end of the academic year, when all the students exhibit thier final projects. Trent Univertsity, Fine Arts School, alternative exhibitions, new spaces ... All this huge information, plus the language adaptation, plus the change of place, plus the shock to be in such an amazing place, in four days. We were dying of tiredness, but above all, we were ecstatic.

También estuvimos en The Trent University viendo trabajos de arquitectura, diseño gráfico, moda, vestuario... Increíble.
We also went at The Trent University and we saw works of architecture, graphic design, fashion, costume ... Unbelievable.








Esto es Cobden Chambers. Podría parecer un simple callejón en una calle comercial del centro, pero si te adentras a través de él, te topas con un pequeño corralito de tiendas vintage, antigüedades y conciertos eventuales. Un lugar abierto recientemente y muy mágico.
This is Cobden Chambers. It might seem a simple alley in a commercial street in the center, but if you walk through it, you will stumble upon a small yard of vintage shops, antiques and random concerts. A place recently opened and very magical.









Y para terminar, la inauguración de una galería de arte alternativa, Backlit. ¡Los talleres de los propios artistas estaban allí mismo!
And finally, the opening of an alternative art gallery, Backlit. The workshops of the artists were right there!
